Accenting Shadows (often abbreviated as A:.S:.) was an obscure Bay Area project that existed from 2007 - 2015. Comprised of Barrett Clark and Flora Dexter, A:.S:. was the industrial dark ambient formation of this SF weird electronics power duo. Known for unhinged and maximum volume live sets at various Katabatik events - in dark clubs and forests; this project also had a private studio practice that spanned across many years. A few tracks were released via Katabatik CDR Compilations in the aughts, as well as on a Cuss-Fetish split cassette release in 2015 (Side A being RPTN; Barrett Clark’s solo acid tekno noise project).
The project ceased when Barrett Clark tragically lost his life in the Oakland warehouse fire of December 2nd, 2016. Most of these tracks have never been heard outside of a small circle of friends, and were extracted and archived from Barrett’s hard drives. A:.S:. collects these studio works, and adds in a highlight from a 2011 Winter Solstice live set at Mr Floppy’s Flophouse in Oakland. Archived and remastered with care by Michael Buchanan in collaboration with Flora Dexter, this collection stands the test of time as an album with 10 deep vortices of telluric currents.
This material explores elemental and rhizomatic sound design using various analog monosynths through racks of digital effects, and archaic vinyl records manipulated via heavy processing. Many of the tracks are long form, allowing the sonic shadows to gather and creep unnoticed. Deceptively simple, these deep drones hide subtle manipulations, that drift in all directions. This dreamlike compendium foreshadows the listener’s attunement towards the qualities of darkness, while hearkening back to days long past.
Identity Theft returns with his best spell of emotions from this cryptic operator of the Northwest. Spanning dissection table electro minimalism of "Outdoor Warning" that's come from clear understanding of the lineage, to the gas release ambience of "Room 253" and "Remain", this is my favorite piece in his prolific output over the years within the Katabatik ecosystem. A must for all fans of suttle and thoughtful electro and ambient. Kush Arora
This track (and moreso "Hash") possibly define the "astral dub" sound they were creating. The aching microtonal string melody that fades in around 6:14 still gets me every time. So far ahead of their time. Jay Fields
In the music of Paul Jordan, digitally manipulated field recordings become striking electronic songs that feel eerie and surreal. Bandcamp New & Notable Mar 7, 2020
